It supports lossy compression (like JPG, discarding information the human eye rarely notices), lossless compression (like PNG, preserving every single pixel), an alpha channel — that is, transparency — and even animation, acting as a far more efficient replacement for the aging GIF. None of the traditional formats packs all of those capabilities into a single file.

Why did Google create WebP?

The motivation is both technical and commercial. Images account for the largest share of the weight of a typical web page. Heavy pages load slowly, and slow pages make visitors leave — which hurts conversions, ad revenue, and search rankings. Once Core Web Vitals became a ranking factor, metrics such as LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) started to influence a site's position in Google directly. Cutting a third of the weight of your images is one of the cheapest ways to improve that score.

That is why WebP spread so quickly: WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Cloudflare, and virtually every modern CDN convert images to WebP automatically. The side effect is that end users who right-click and choose "save image as" end up with a file that older versions of Windows, an outdated Photoshop, or a print shop will not recognize. That is exactly the moment when converting back to JPG or PNG becomes necessary.

WebP vs JPG vs PNG: the differences that matter

JPG (or JPEG) was born in 1992 and is still the most universal format in the world. It excels at photographs because its compression algorithm was designed to handle smooth transitions of color and shadow. Its limitations are that it does not support transparency and that it is a lossy format: every time you open, edit, and re-save a JPG, a little information is discarded permanently — the effect known as generation loss.

PNG is the opposite: lossless compression and full transparency support. It is the right choice for logos, icons, screenshots, graphics containing text, and any image that needs to sit cleanly on top of another background. The price is size: a photographic PNG can be five to ten times larger than the equivalent JPG.

WebP tries to take the best of both — and it succeeds, on the web. Outside the browser, though, compatibility is still uneven: plenty of editing software, business systems, printing platforms, marketplaces, and corporate applications still accept nothing but JPG and PNG. It depends on the version. Photoshop has opened and saved WebP natively since version 23.2 (2022). In earlier releases you had to install an external plugin such as WebPShop, copying the plugin file into the program's plug-ins folder. If you are on an older version, the fastest path is still to convert the file to JPG or PNG here and open it normally — with nothing to install.
